Chemical Peels for Acne

Think you need extractions to clear? Think again!

You'd be surprised at just how much a Chemical Peel can clear active acne, prevent new breakouts, and brighten skin tone.

Chemical Peeling is a “skin cell loosening” technique. Ideally, skin sheds and renews itself every 28 days. However, due to genetics, this differs in some people, and as we age, this process drastically slows down. A Chemical Peel is simply an accelerated form of skin exfoliation resulting in newer, smoother skin.

Types of Chemical Peels

Although the name may sound frightening, don’t be scared— there are many types and strengths of Chemical Peels to suit most skin types. There are varying degrees of depth and different types of acids available like Lactic, Salicylic, and Glycolic— just to name a few of our favorites.

Peels range from very light and superficial exfoliation (removing dead skin cells) that require no downtime like the one we do in Corrective Skincare LA's Full Treatment, to Light or Medium Chemical Peels, to the deeper more intense peels like our Custom ProPeel.

The stronger the Chemical Peel the more layers removed, resulting in a deeper resurfacing and refinement of the skin. Stronger Chemical Peels can result in moderate downtime of skin flaking and peeling.

Chemical Peels to Reduce Acne Breakouts

To understand how chemical peeling helps clear acne, it is helpful to know what acne really is.

Another term for acne is Retention Hyperkeratosis.

Retention= holding back

Hyper= a lot

Keratosis= dead skin cells.

Basic idea is skin is stacking up and getting thick. This is why acne is usually associated with oily skin. Dry skin is constantly shedding, maintaining a thinner layer. (not to say those with dry skin won't ever experience a breakout!)

People who have oily skin, generally have thicker, more layers of dead skin cells. The cells aren't turning over as quickly and pores become more impacted. Bacteria are more likely to form and create breakouts.

Chemical Peels are used to help “dry out” active acne, aka loosen deep impactions. This process essentially brings acne closer to the surface and helps reduce clogged pores.

Chemical Peels also help reduce shallow wrinkling and scarring, lighten hyperpigmentation (dark spots on the skin), and improve the overall appearance and health of aging skin. Clearing of acne depends on diligence to both home care and regularity of Chemical Peels. Clearing is also determined by how well instructions from our Estheticians are followed.
