Accutane. Is it really worth the risks?! By Sophie Bull – CSLA Encino

October 3rd, 2016

Accutane (Isotretinoin), or Roaccutane as it is known in parts of the world, was discovered in 1979 when it was first given to patients with severe acne. It was originally recommended for people with severe acne that did not respond to other treatments, but has gained in popularity in the past 25 years and is prescribed more and more frequently for less severe acne. This practice is controversial because Accutane is a serious medication that can cause severe birth defects as well as potentially long-lasting side effects to the user. Accutane is a medication taken orally and only for a limited time due to the severity of the drug.

In most cases acne can be treated topically without any risk. It just requires the individual to be consistent with their home care routine. My advice would be to always try and treat topically first. The risk of side effects simply isn’t worth it. (See side effects below!)

So how does Accutane work?

Exactly how Accutane works on a cellular level is unknown but we do know that it affects all four ways that acne develops:

1) It dramatically reduces the size of the skins oil glands, therefore reducing the amount of oil the glands produce.

2) Acne bacteria (P.acnes) causes acne which lives in the skins oil, therefore  reducing the amount of bacteria

3) It slows down how fast the skin produces skin cells inside the pore, which helps pores from becoming clogged

4) It has anti-inflammatory properties

Does it work for everyone?

Acne may get worse within the first month of Accutane and studies show a relapse of about 33% in most patients, not to mention all the side effects (stated below) so please know while it can successfully clear some patients acne, it isn’t a CURE for everyone!

Accutante side effects:

Accutane is a systemic medication that affects the entire body. Side effects are numerous and widespread and affect almost 80% of patients. Side effects are most often mild to moderate but in some cases they can be severe or long term.

Perfect Time Of Year For A Chemical Peel- NOW! By Sophie Bull, CSLA – Encino

September 19th, 2016

Chemical Peels are great for many skin condition! It helps clear acne, discoloration and scarring. It also is great for anti-aging; the more dead skin you slough off, the less the appearance of fine lines. A chemical peel is a procedure in which an acid solution is used to remove dead and damaged upper skin layers to smooth and refine the skin’s texture.

There are many different peels out there, all using different acids, and all vary in strength. It is important to book an appointment and discuss what YOUR wants are. Some chemical peels will result in more deep peeling (more downtime), so you will want to schedule these  in advance of important events.

Corrective Skincare has three types of Chemical Peels. The first is our ‘Light Chemical Peel’ which has minimal peeling (little to no downtime) and is used to dry out active acne, dislodge blackheads, reduce shallow scarring & wrinkles and lighten hyper-pigmented discoloration spots, reducing the effects of sun damage and improving skin texture. There is a ‘Medium Chemical Peel’, which has more peeling (more downtime) and goes a step deeper and is a little more aggressive. The third peel is known as the ‘Custom Pro Peel’. This is great at eliminating deeper lines and wrinkles, removing age spots and deeper scars. It will result in the most peeling (about 4-6 days of downtime).

Deep Chemical Peels are best performed in the fall and winter, when the sun is not out. Call us if you’d like more information on which peel would be best for you! 818-981-6130 (Encino) 424-280-4591 (Santa Monica) or

Teenage Acne Sucks! By Sophie Bull, CSLA – Encino

June 3rd, 2016

Acne is by far the most common skin complaint among teenagers and can really effect self confidence. Being a teenager is tough enough without having to worry about breakouts! The best way to prevent acne is by educating your teenager on how acne develops, the triggers behind those flareups, and providing a customized skincare routine for home use. Top tips for keeping young skin clear:

–  Keep skin clean. Young skin produces more oil so it’s important to wash your face morning and night with our “Facial Shampoo” which will remove excess oil, dirt, make up, and sweat.

–  Always wash your skin after sports or working out. Sweat and oil can settle on the skins surface, trapping dirt and bacteria in the pores. The quicker you can get the sweat and oil off your skin the better!

–  Use the correct products- make sure all skincare products are oil free and non-comedogenic. Everyone has different skin and different needs. A complete evaluation of the individual particular skin type helps.

–  Don’t pick!!! As tempting as it may be to squeeze a pimple – DON’T! Picking and squeezing can make your acne worse and result in scarring. Remember a pimple is temporary but a scar will last. (Photo courtesy of

ICE, ICE BABY! By Sophie Bull, CSLA – Encino

May 1st, 2016

YES!  Absolutely, Ice is great for your skin and can be beneficial for all skin types, especially those who have Acne!

Image result for pictures of ice cube on acne
I advise all of my clients to ice twice daily (once in the morning, once at night) after washing. Icing is a great natural exfoliant, great for preserving the skin and reduces redness and inflammation. It also helps your products and medication penetrate better into the skin, which will give you faster & better results.

After washing your face, take a clean ice cube from your ice tray (or click on this link to purchase one of our special ice cups) and glide it over your face for approximately 20 seconds. Keep the ice moving at all times as it can burn like heat if held in the same spot for long enough. When finished, dispose of the ice cube and pat dry with a clean towel. For extra sensitive skin, you can add some natural Aloe Vera Gel with the water, before freezing which will help soothe irritated skin.

Be kind to your skin and ice twice a day! Your skin will thank you for it!

To Steam or Not to Steam. By Kirstie Reese, CSLA – SM

September 6th, 2015

When I was in middle school the science teacher told us that you should shower with hot water to open your skin’s pores and when you’re done showering a quick rinse with cold water will close the pores. Unfortunately this myth is 100% NOT TRUE. The skin’s pores do not have muscles that open and close them.

Steaming your face with very hot water in the shower or with an facial steamer at home can actually cause more damage than good. It’s also not beneficial for oily/acne-prone skin. First of all, steam or hot water can cause the skin to become flushed, red and warm to the touch. The redness is the blood coming closer to the surface of the skin which can cause capillary damage because the capillaries are becoming engorged with blood. The skin’s natural response to heat is to cool down which is why we produce sweat. Heat will also cause the skin to activate oil glands and in return, produce more oil. As we all know, excess oil can lead to acne!

Another issue with steaming is too much steam is can actually dehydrate your skin! Isn’t that weird? Who knew that hot water droplets can cause dry, dehydrated skin! It totally defeats the purpose of steaming in the first place.

My recommendation is to use tepid/room temperature water to wash your face. It’s not too hot and not too cold. Lets not forget that you’re washing your face to CLEAN your skin’s pore from oil, make up, debris, daily environmental pollution and dead skin cells. Use a cleanser that gets your skin squeaky clean like our Green Facial Shampoo! You can grab one here: Take your time to clean your skin (with your fingers) and get into every nook and cranny of your face to make sure you’ve covered everything! Fun fact- the average adult female has 20,000 pores on her face! Which means there’s 20,000 chances of an acne flare up!

I hope this post was helpful. Leave your comments or questions below. We want to hear from you!

The Importance of Sunscreen. By Kirstie Reese, CSLA – SM

September 4th, 2015

Sunscreen, sunblock or “SPF” which stands for Sun Protection Factor can come in a lotion, spray, or gel and is used to absorb or reflect the sun’s harmful ultraviolet rays to protect against sunburn. There are two types of sunscreens: physical and chemical. Physical sunscreens reflect sunlight off the skin’s surface so they uv rays aren’t absorbed into the skin (Zinc Oxide or Titanium dioxide). Chemical sunscreens absorb the UV rays (Avobenzone, Oxybenzone, Helioplex, etc).
A broad spectrum sunscreen is important because it protects against the UVA (the aging ray) and UVB (the burning ray). It is important to reapply your sunscreen because after two hours it becomes less effective causing your skin to become vulnerable again. If reapplying SPF and make up sounds like too much of an inconvenience then I’d recommend a mineral power SPF like – Peter Thomas Roth Instant Mineral Power SPF 30. (
Wearing sunscreen is anti-aging by default because it is protecting your skin from the “UVA” rays which penetrate to a deeper layer of the skin affecting the skins collagen and elasticity causing wrinkles and sagging skin. Dark spots/sun-spots/pigmentation can also be controlled by wearing sunscreen diligently.
Personally, I use Peter Thomas Roth Ultra lite SPF 30 because it doesn’t clog my pores and adds a little bit of moisture back into my skin. ( For patients who don’t like to feel moisturized and would like more of the matte finish- I recommend Peter Thomas Roth Uber dry which goes on very light and doesn’t make you feel greasy. (
For other helpful hints, call us NOW and we’ll help you find the best sunscreen for your particular skin type!

How Long Will It Take To Clear My Acne? By Kirstie Reese, CSLA-SaMo

July 23rd, 2015

This is a question that I am asked in almost every treatment and the truth is: I don’t know. I imagine this is a shocking response. Shouldn’t this be an easy answer?

Hear me out. There are so many factors that play into what’s causing your acne that may take some time to figure out and address. For example, I may notice that your left cheek has more break-outs than your right side. It could just be from sleeping on the left side, not changing your pillowcase often enough, resting your hands on your face during work/class or possibly your cell/work phone pressing against the cheek area. Another example: you have more break-outs in the hairline/forehead area. This is common when you’re not rinsing off your cleanser enough or from working out and allowing the sweat to sit on the forehead/hairline area.

Clearing acne is 80% the patient’s responsibility and 20% the Esthetician. As an Esthetician, I can only guide you on what home-care products to use (when, where, why and how) but it is up to the patient it use them properly and consistently. Everyone has different skin and everyone’s skin reacts differently to treatment and home-care products. What works for me, may not work the same way for you or for your best friend. Or for your neighbor. It’s about lifestyle habits and there are so many variables to this. The more diligent you are at home, the faster you’ll get your results.

For this reason, it could take a few weeks or a few months clear. That said, it’s possible! With regular skincare treatments, peels, a consistent home-care routine and a CAN-DO attitude, Corrective Skincare can help you achieve Confidence through Clarity!

Take the first step to clear skin by making an appointment at one of our locations:

Professional Products VS Store Bought Products. By Kirstie Reese, CSLA-SaMo

July 13th, 2015

Before I became an esthetician, I tried every store brand product out there because I was on a budget and I couldn’t afford the expensive products the professionals recommended to me. My logic was that they were WAY over priced for the exact same product! Nobody told to me the difference and why professional brands are more expensive.

So I am here to tell you why. First, you get what you pay for. Chemists are paid big bucks to create these products for a reason. You are spending more money on professional products because they have better, contain more active ingredients that have been tested and are scientifically proven to work. Store brand products have A LOT of fillers, preservatives and buffering agents in their products which they sell in bulk to keep the cost of the item down. Preservatives are also known as Parabens or “shelf life fillers” which make the product last longer in your bathroom cabinet, but they are not good for your skin. These fillers can also bring down the efficiency of the active ingredients.

Many people don’t realize how little the cosmetic industry is regulated. As long as there is some kind of twist of truth behind the marketing, then it’s ok by the FDA. For example, the OTC (over the counter) 2% salicylic acid medication may be just a marketing scheme to get you to purchase the product. In reality, there could be a drop of 2% salicylic acid in a full gallon of formula, making the 2% salicylic acid much less effective. But technically, since there is 2% salicylic acid in the original formula, they’re not lying about have it in the tube you purchased.

At Corrective Skincare, we have a chemist that formulates most of our products such as Benzoyl Peroxide, Glycolic Acid, Collagen Serum, and Therapeutic Mask, to name a few. I stand behind our chemist formulated products because I know they are *free from buffering agents and fillers* which makes them much more effective and stronger then what you can find over the counter. We also carry pharmaceutical brand products we trust to contain highly effective ingredients with authentic marketing.

Everyone’s skin is different – what you pick out from the shelf may not be right for your skin. It’s best if you find an esthetician that understands your skin and can recommend a regimen using professional products tailored for your skin and specific goals. Call us NOW and we’ll help you find the best chemist made product for your particular skin type! 818-981-6130 or
